Registered Acupuncture

Medical acupuncture is a specialized technique that involves precise stimulation of peripheral nerves using fine solid needles, also known as acupuncture needles. The needles are inserted into specific anatomical sites that are defined based on their neurofunctional properties. The therapeutic goals and treatment targets are selected based on the underlying neurological dysfunctions that are contributing to the patient's clinical symptoms. By addressing these dysfunctions, medical acupuncture aims to promote healing and restore proper nerve function, ultimately improving the patient's overall health and well-being.

MORE THAN ENERGY

Acupuncture studies have shown, for example, that inserting needles into the skin stimulates nerves in the underlying muscles. This stimulation, researchers feel, sends impulses up the spinal cord to a relatively primitive part of the brain known as the limbic system, as well as to the midbrain and the pituitary gland. Somehow that signaling leads to the release of endorphins and monoamines, chemicals that block pain signals in the spinal cord and brain.

MODERN ACUPUNCTURE

At our clinic, our approach to acupuncture treatments is based on a growing body of evidence that shows how acupuncture leads to real physiological changes in the body. Many studies have shown that the insertion of acupuncture needles into the skin stimulates nerves in underlying muscles, which sends impulses up the spinal cord to the limbic system, midbrain, and pituitary gland. This stimulation results in the release of endorphins and monoamines, which can block pain signals in the spinal cord and brain. These physiologic changes may help explain why acupuncture is effective in reducing pain and improving overall well-being.

Acupuncture Mississauga

DOES IT HURT

Acupuncture needles can feel uncomfortable at times, they rarely hurt. They are very thin (only about three times the thickness of a human hair and much finer than the hypodermic needles used to give injections) and are designed to enter the skin with little resistance. Once the needles are inserted (generally from one to 15 are used), the acupuncturist may twist them manually or send a weak electrical current through them to increase the energy flow. The needles are left in for 20 to 30 minutes, depending on the ailment. Some practitioners also use moxibustion, which involves heating the needles or acupoint with a slowly burning herbal agent (primarily the dried herb mugwort) to hasten healing.

BETTER ACUPUNCTURE

Acupuncture is an ancient technique that involves the insertion of thin needles into specific points on the body to treat or prevent illnesses. Modern or medical acupuncture combines traditional knowledge with modern science to provide optimal results for patients. At our clinic in Mississauga, our skilled acupuncture therapist recognizes that acupuncture can be an effective adjunct and acceptable treatment for a variety of conditions. Have Questions?

What is medical acupuncture?

How acupuncture works. Western medical acupuncture is the use of acupuncture following a medical diagnosis. It involves stimulating sensory nerves under the skin and in the muscles. This results in the body producing natural substances, such as pain-relieving endorphins.

How is acupuncture used in healthcare?

Acupuncture points are believed to stimulate the central nervous system. This, in turn, releases chemicals into the muscles, spinal cord, and brain. These biochemical changes may stimulate the body's natural healing abilities and promote physical and emotional well-being.

Is acupuncture a safe treatment?

The risks of acupuncture are low if you have a competent, certified acupuncture practitioner using sterile needles. Common side effects include soreness and minor bleeding or bruising where the needles were inserted. Single-use, disposable needles are now the practice standard, so the risk of infection is minimal.

Who should not have acupuncture treatment?

Bleeding disorder such as hemophilia or use of blood thinners. Infections skin disorder or disease. If pregnant, needling in the abdominal area or lumbosacral region should be avoided. It is also advisable to avoid any acupuncture that might stimulate the early delivery of the fetus or even lead to abortion.

What proof is there that acupuncture works?

There have been extensive studies conducted on acupuncture, especially for back and neck pain, osteoarthritis/knee pain, and headache. However, researchers are only beginning to understand whether acupuncture can be helpful for various health conditions.

Results from a number of studies suggest that acupuncture may help ease types of pain that are often chronic such as low-back pain, neck pain, and osteoarthritis/knee pain. It also may help reduce the frequency of tension headaches and prevent migraine headaches. Therefore, acupuncture appears to be a reasonable option for people with chronic pain to consider. However, clinical practice guidelines are inconsistent in recommendations about acupuncture.
